3 Tips for Preparing for Your Upcoming Sleep Testing

Let’s face it: It can be hard to fall asleep during a sleep study. Very few people are comfortable in a new environment. Many patients don’t sleep well away from their own bed. And then you have to wear sensors and wires while you try to nod off.

The team at ApneCare Sleep Lab go out of their way to help you feel as comfortable as possible. From carefully arranging the sensor wires to allow movement while you sleep, to providing high-quality mattresses and creating a quiet, peaceful environment that’s more like a high-end hotel than a sleep lab, you’ll find exceptional support for your overnight sleep study.

But there are steps you can take to prepare for your overnight sleep testing that improve your comfort and make it easier to sleep. Here are our top three tips:

Maintain your normal schedule and don’t nap

One of the most important tips is to maintain your normal work and sleep schedule in the days before your sleep study. When you’re in the habit of getting up and going to bed around the same time, you’ll find it’s easier to fall asleep at your usual time at the sleep lab.

No matter how tired you may be during the day of your scheduled sleep study, don’t nap. Or at least, do your best not to nap. If you can’t stay awake, limit your nap to 20-30 minutes.

Avoid caffeine and alcohol

Although you can bring snacks with you, be sure to have your normal evening meal before coming in for your sleep study. Most importantly, avoid eating or drinking anything with caffeine after lunch.

It’s also best not to drink alcoholic beverages before a sleep study. Alcohol can help you get to sleep initially, but it diminishes the quality of your sleep and may affect your breathing patterns. These alcohol-caused changes interfere with the results of your sleep study.

Pack all the gear you need

Sure, it’s only one night, but you’re able to settle in and relax better if you have all the accoutrements of home. These are some of the essentials:

Pillow and blanket

Your room at ApneCare Sleep Lab has pillows and blankets, but most of our patients find they sleep better when they bring their own pillow. You may also have a favorite blanket or throw to help you relax.


The only requirement for sleepwear is that it should be two pieces and comfortable. Nightgowns and one-piece pajamas don’t accommodate the sensor wires.

Personal toiletries and change of clothes

Don’t forget to pack your toothpaste, toothbrush, comb, brush, shampoo, skin-care products, makeup remover, and any other items you usually use before going to bed and upon rising in the morning. You’ll also need a change of clothes for the next day.

Devices and snacks that help you relax and sleep

If you follow a regular nightly routine, feel free to duplicate it to the extent possible when you come in for your sleep study. Bring reading material, your laptop (we have Wi-Fi), or a movie to watch. If you normally have a snack, bring it along. You can also bring a white noise machine if that helps you get to sleep.


If you use a CPAP or BiPAP machine, bring your mask. As long as you know your current pressure settings, you can use the machine in the sleep lab. If you don’t know your settings, you’ll need to bring along all of your equipment.


Bring all prescription and over-the-counter medications or supplements you routinely use.
