Overnight Sleep Study Q & A

What is an overnight sleep study?

An overnight sleep study is a valuable diagnostic tool in determining what’s happening to your body while you sleep. The best way to do this is to spend the night in a specialized facility, like ApneCare Sleep Lab, where experts are able to monitor and track your sleep by measuring your:

  • Brain waves
  • Heart rate
  • Blood oxygen levels
  • Breathing
  • Movements

This information provides valuable clues as to what’s interrupting your ability to get a good night’s sleep.

Why do I need an overnight sleep study?

With sleep problems, diagnosis is tricky because, in order to review your symptoms or perform an examination, you have to be asleep.

So, to better understand what’s happening during the nighttime hours, facilities such as ApneCare Sleep Lab provide state-of-the-art monitoring equipment in a comfortable environment that promotes sleep in order to gather this information.

An overnight sleep study is the best first step in getting to the bottom of your inability to sleep, which may be tied to a number of issues, including:

  • Insomnia
  • Sleep apnea
  • Narcolepsy
  • Restless leg syndrome
  • Advanced sleep phase disorder
  • Sleepwalking

How do I prepare for an overnight sleep study?

There’s very little you need to do before an overnight sleep study at ApneCare Sleep Lab, which supplies all the comforts you need in your own private room, including a comfortable bed and quality bedding. In order to get the most out of your study:

  • Don’t take a nap that day
  • Avoid caffeinated beverages and alcohol afternoon
  • Do take a shower beforehand

When you arrive, between 8:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m., a sleep specialist shows you to your room and places harmless electrodes around your body. Once you’re hooked up to the monitoring equipment, you just relax and try and sleep. If you need a special pillow, books, or a snack, please bring these with you.

The next morning, the sleep technician removes the electrodes and you may go home. Results are available five days after the sleep study.
